Introduction to CASSON Anambra State

CASSON Anambra State Chapter is a branch of the national body of Counselling Association of Nigeria (CASSON), which held its first preliminary and inaugural meeting on November 15th and June 17th, 1976, respectively.
Anambra State Chapter was founded in 1991 after the creation of the state through the efforts of Prof. Mercy Aku Anagbogu and Dr. Nkeiruka Bernadette Nwoye (the pioneer state coordinator), who laid a solid foundation for guidance and counselling services in today's Anambra State secondary schools in particular.
Prof. Mercy Aku Anagbogu became the first chairperson of the Anambra State Chapter of Counselling Association of Nigeria (CASSON).
There were indeed laudable accomplishments during her tenure. Many workshops and seminars were held, including ones aimed at building capacity and upgrading the knowledge of guidance counsellors from various sectors in the state.
She handed over the State Chairmanship to Prof. G.C. Unachukwu later in 1998.

Much were not done during this period until 2009, when the late Dr Nonyelum Rosecarmel Obed-Ibeh, the pioneer desk officer for guidance and counselling services with the State Ministry of Education, Awka unified counsellors from all the sectors in the stat - primary, public and private secondary schools, tertiary institutions, and non-school settings.
By this, Anambra State Chapter of CASSON became stronger.

After the unification, Prof. Angelina U. Okoye was elected as the Chairperson from 2009–2011. She worked assiduously with her executive members and handed over to Mr. Albert Onyebuchi, who was Chairperson for three consecutive tenures: 2011–2014, 2014–2016, & 2016–2020.
His first tenure experienced remarkable achievements; prominent among them were the birth of the Anambra State Secondary School Counselling Association (ASSCA) in 2012 and a very successful first state conference held in 2014, among others.

However, the idea to have sub-arms of the association in the various sectors was conceived by Prof. M.A. Anagbogu. According to her, it will help solidify the state chapter; hence, ASSCA was birthed and inaugurated in 2012 by Barr. Lizzy Umeh, the then Secretary of the Post-Primary Schools Services Commission (PPSSC) in Awka, under Mrs. Iruka Ogbalu and Mrs. Uche Ilika as the State and Assistant State Co-ordinators, respectively.
Dr. Edna Nkechi Ofojebe (FCASSON), was then elected the pioneer Chairperson of ASSCA - the office she held on till 2019. Her tenure was indeed a strong force behind the state chapters' achievements through her instrumentality in mobilising the secondary school sector with unalloyed support from the State Co-ordinator - Dr. Veronica Nkiruka Nkechukwu and her assistant - Mrs Eucharia Nkiru Ilika.

It is worthy of note that Mr. Albert Onyebuchi was re-elected in 2014–2016. A number of achievements were also recorded during that period. His last tenure was 2016–2020. There was no election of Exco members after this last tenure as the whole world was ravaged by the COVID-19 pandemic and they were unable to conduct election.
It was in 2021 that Hon. Dr. Vera Nkiru Nwadinobi (FCASSON) called for the election of Exco members and indicated interest in becoming State Chairperson. Her action moved Mr. Albert Onyebuchi to call for a state meeting. In the meeting, the Election Committee, headed by Prof. Mercy Chika Okonkwo, was instituted by consensus opinion.
The committee members worked very hard and followed all the due process to produce the present Exco members under the Chairmanship of Rev. Sr. Prof. Susana Amaka Obineli (FCASSON) on June 6, 2021.
The present Executive Members have made laudable achievements within this short period and are still pushing the Association to an enviable height.

TO GOD BE THE GLORY.
